Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees up to 35 m tall.

Leaves: Leaves compound (pinnate). Usually opposite. Leaflets 6–12 pairs, ovate–elliptic, asymmetrical 13–20 cm long, 5–7.5 cm wide. Apex attenuate. Base cuneate to rounded. Surfaces glabrous, glandular punctate. Margins weakly revolute. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers bisexual (perfect), 3–4 mm long. Calyx of 5 sepals. Corolla of 5 petals, white. Stamens 5, alternating with staminodes 5, Staminal filaments pubescent at apex. Ovary superior, 5-celled, usually pubescent; ovules usually 5–6 per cell; style base with 5 glands.

Fruit: Capsules dark brown; cylindrical; slightly 5–angled; 6–10 cm long; ca. 2.5 cm in diameter; pericarp somewhat woody; often tuberculate. Seeds 4.5–6 cm long (including membranous wings).
